Are Dental Implants Painful? A Surgeon’s

  • July 14, 2026
  • Com 3

This is, without question, the most common question we hear in consultation — and understandably so. The idea of a titanium post being placed into your jawbone sounds intimidating. But the honest, clinical answer is this: the implant placement itself is not a painful experience, because it is performed under local anaesthesia, and the days that follow are manageable with standard post-operative care. Here’s what the process actually feels like, stage by stage.

During the Procedure: Pressure, Not Pain

Dental implant placement is done under local anaesthesia, which numbs the surgical site completely. What patients typically feel during the procedure is pressure and vibration — from the drilling and placement of the implant — rather than sharp pain. Most patients are surprised at how uneventful the actual chair-time experience is compared to what they’d imagined.

For patients with significant dental anxiety, we also discuss additional comfort measures during the consultation so the experience is manageable from start to finish.

The First 48–72 Hours: Mild, Predictable Discomfort

Once the anaesthesia wears off, it’s normal to experience:

  • Mild to moderate soreness at the surgical site
  • Some swelling, which typically peaks around day 2–3
  • Slight bruising in rare cases, depending on the extent of surgery

This is standard post-surgical inflammation, not a sign that something has gone wrong. It is well controlled with the anti-inflammatory and pain medication we prescribe, and most patients describe the discomfort as similar to — or milder than — a tooth extraction.

Why the Discomfort Is Manageable

  1. Precision surgical technique — Minimising trauma to the surrounding bone and gum tissue during placement directly reduces post-operative discomfort and swelling.
  2. Structured aftercare — Clear instructions on medication, diet (soft foods for the first few days), and oral hygiene around the surgical site help the area heal predictably without complications.

When Pain Signals a Problem

While mild soreness is expected, pain that is severe, worsening after day 3–4, or accompanied by fever or persistent swelling is not typical and should be evaluated immediately. This is uncommon, but it’s exactly why follow-up care is built into our implant protocol — we monitor healing rather than sending you off after the procedure and hoping for the best.

The Bottom Line

For the vast majority of patients, dental implant placement is far less painful than anticipated — a controlled, anaesthetised procedure followed by a short, predictable recovery window. The anxiety around implants is almost always worse than the actual experience.

If fear of pain has been holding you back from replacing a missing tooth, a consultation is the best next step — we’ll walk you through exactly what your specific case will involve. Book a consultation with our oral & maxillofacial surgeon.
